I have recommended some great books which can be hugely inspirational and encouraging when facing you're problems. It is well worth investing in a self help book that is not only informative about BDD, but actually provides tips and advice so you can begin to make changes straight away.

"The Broken Mirror: Understanding and Treating Body Dysmorphic Disorder" by Katharine Phillips (Oxford University Press)

A highly recommended book written for sufferers. This book is the most comprehensive and up-to-date source on BDD and its treatment. The treatment sections of this book (and other sections) were updated in 2005 and now provide more detailed information about the treatment of BDD.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder: A Treatment Manual (John Wiley & Sons Ltd)

This book is a treatment manual for BDD using cognitive behaviour therapy and contains a chapter on pharmacotherapy. Detailed client handouts and information will make it accessible to a wide range of professionals.

"The BDD Workbook: Overcome Body Dysmorphic Disorder and End Body Image Obsessions by James Claiborn and Cherry Pedrick (Airlift book company)

Provides a programme of support and relief for sufferers of BDD. An excellent section on relapse prevention and Mindfulness.

"The Feeling Good Handbook" by David D. Burns (Penguin Books)

Recommended by various professionals at Priory Hospitals as being one of the best CBT self-help books available. It is very in depth and whilst not dealing directly with BDD, it covers Depression, Anxiety, Social Phobia and various other related illnesses. This book may support you if you are going to, or are already having CBT.

"Feeling Good about the Way You Look: A Program for Overcoming Body Image Problems" by Sabine Wilhelm (The Guilford Press)

Step-by-step guideline, and self-assessment tool.

1) Out-patient adults on NHS

Adult out-patients with BDD are treated under the care of Dr David Veale at the Maudsley Hospitals Centre for Anxiety Disorders and Trauma.
Referrals can be made to
Dr David Veale,

Centre for Anxiety for Anxiety Disorders and Trauma

99 Denmark Hill,
London, SE5 8AZ.

Some GPs have "open access" (especially locally) but most people will require a referral from their local community mental health team and consultant psychiatrist or treating NHS therapist. Patients may be funded by their Primary Care Trust (PCT) or by the Department of Health if they fulfil criteria for being treatment refractory - this makes getting access easier. (See the website link in blue above for details)

2) Residential Unit adults on NHS

For the residential unit, patients are under the care of Dr David Veale during their stay in an unstaffed house in the grounds of the Bethlem Royal Hospital. There is also a self-contained family flat. The average stay is up to 12 weeks.

Referrals are accepted on a national basis and usually need to be made by a consultant psychiatrist or treating NHS therapist of a community mental health team. Very few Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) allow open access by their GP for an assessment or for treatment. Patients may also be funded by the Department of Health if they meet treatment refractory criteria. These criteria and other referral information for the residential unit here.

The national service is especially suitable for those who have not made sufficient progress with CBT locally or where the local services are not developed.
Referrals to:

Dr David Veale,
The Anxiety Disorders Residential Unit,
Alexandra House,
The Bethlem Royal Hospital,
Monks Orchard Road,
Beckenham,
Kent BR3 3BX. Tel: 020 3228 4146, Fax: 0203 228 4051.
Email: Kaye.Wake@slam.nhs.uk. Enquiries to Kaye Wake at the number above.

3) In-patient adults NHS

If NHS patients are not suitable for the Bethlem and need nursing care (e.g. when suicidal or unable to self-care) then they may be admitted at the Priory Hospital North London, (referrals to Dr David Veale, The Priory North London, The Bourne, Southgate, London N14 6RA. Tel 020 8882 8191 Secretary Rowena Kendal).

Referrals will need be made by a consultant psychiatrist and the support of a Primary Care Trust. Patients may also be funded by the Department of Health if they meet treatment refractory criteria.

4) Adolescent out-patient NHS

Adolescents with BDD are treated under Dr Heyman at the Maudsley. A small number of treatment refractory adolescents or adults with BDD may be admitted under Dr. Veale's care on the Adolescent Unit to The Priory Hospital North London (referrals as above)
